Talk to a Lawyer key facts:
- The July 16, 2022, governorship election in Osun State was a highly contested and controversial one.
- The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner with 403,371 votes, while Adegboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress (APC) came second with 314,931 votes.
- However, Oyetola and his party challenged the result at the Election Petitions Tribunal, alleging irregularities and malpractices. The tribunal, led by Justice Tertse Kume, overturned INEC’s declaration and pronounced Oyetola as the winner with 290,266 votes.
- Adeleke and his party appealed the tribunal’s decision at the Court of Appeal, where a panel of five judges, headed by Justice Mohammed Shaibu, reversed the tribunal’s judgment and upheld Adeleke’s victory.
- Oyetola and his party then filed an appeal at the Supreme Court, seeking to nullify the appeal court’s verdict. The Supreme Court heard the case on Monday, May 8, 2023, and on Tuesday judged Adeleke to be the winner of the Osun election.
